Did Evangelicals Abandon the GOP?

Today’s Washington Post had a very interesting article titled “Democrats Win Bigger Share of Religious Vote” (Parties Disagree on Why The Gap Has Narrowed), I found this to be a very interesting article written by a person who definitely does not understand what an Evangelical Christian is. Most people have heard about the poll taken regarding the spiritual state of the country. You hear this poll cited on cable networks all the time. It‘s conclusion is that 85% of all Americans profess to be Christians, but when you get down to the nitty gritty only about 7% of those people are true Evangelicals. George Barna of the Barna Group states "...evangelicals remain just 7% of the adult population. That number has not changed since the Barna Group began measuring the size of the evangelical public in 1994....less than one out of five born again adults (18%) meet the evangelical criteria. “(N = 1003; margin of error = ±3.2%). So, the question is who did abandon true Christian values and go over to the dark side.

Wisdom will understand that the heart of every man at its root is rotten; Genesis 6:5 states the following (Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually) So we see that there are no good people as much as we would like to believe there are. John Calvin said it this way. “If we look upon the world we see some given to covetousness and some to pillage and extortion, and not only the little thieves that are whipped and hanged (today we put them in jail); we see even such as are robbers , I say not in woods and forest, but in houses, in markets and in places of justice. We see that there is neither faith nor loyalty among most men, but that all men are given to pillaging and thieving, without respect for any equity or uprightness. We see some debauched by whoredom and infamy, others in drunkenness, and other kinds of evil and loose behavior. We see men rap out oaths, perjuries, and other cursed things. We see secret compacts, poisonings, spiting’, malice’s, treasons, and wicked practices” Excerpt from John Calvin’s Sermons on Ephesians

We look on our culture as basically good, we American are arrogant because rather that strive to be truly godly people who bring light to the world, we are like blind men who look in the mirror and walk away proclaiming our beauty. We do this by accomplishing what we call acts of kindness like giving aid to poorer countries, by attempting to overcome diseases that are the worst possible sicknesses, we overthrow despots who are cruel task masters in foreign nations and attempt to bring freedom across the globe. On the surface all of these are good acts, but does it cause us to be blind to our poor spiritual state, because we pat ourselves on the back and feel that is enough to prove our goodness; in the meantime we are debauched, decadent, and tolerant of all forms of evil. We give in to the temptation to commend and flatter ourselves because of our feigned virtues.

So, did evangelicals truly go over to the dark side, or are they people who fall into the ranks of those described above; the four out of five in the Barna study.

I happen to be a dogmatic thinker and dogmatically conclude that birds of a feather do flock together. So if religious people voted with the Dems in this election, were they not showing their true affiliations? Yes, there were the Mark Foley’s, Cunningham’s, and Abramoff’s, in the GOP, and yes there was the cronyisms, the nepotism, and many other isms. But that is not the stated platform of the GOP. So the house has hopefully been cleaned, albeit the timing was very bad since the time to clean ones political house is in the primaries, none the less, the house has been cleaned. But this cleaning not only removed the elected wolves in sheep’s clothing, but also the uncommitted, those tossed about by every wind of doctrine, like a leaf tossed about on a roiling sea. So the conservative movement may be somewhat smaller but hopefully on firm footing. Now we can begin to build again and on a solid foundation. In the meantime, the asylum is in the hands of the insane.
